Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered approach that involves a particular way of understanding our role and how we can engage with clients in meaningful ways about change and growth. One of the four foundational communication skills in MI is the reflection, which plays an important role in building rapport and facilitating behavior change conversations. Our focus will be on types of reflections, how to use them to elicit more discussion about behaviour change, and ways to deepen your reflections with clients.
Using the newest edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow (4th ed., 2023) by Miller & Rollnick, key concepts, skills, and other relevant information will be presented. There will be opportunities to ask questions, practice skills, engage in self-reflection and discussion.
To participate in these sessions, experience in Motivational Interviewing is needed from previous participation in an introductory course, or other equivalent experience. Please note that participants are expected to be on camera during sessions, and be able to actively engage in discussion, breakout rooms, and skills practice. Please plan accordingly, so that you can be an active participant.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- List types of complex reflections used in MI
- Recognize how reflections can increase understanding the client’s point of view and their motivation to make change
- Explore application of multiple types of reflections to the same statement to deepen conversations with clients
